I am not interested in perfection. This limiting word can be analyzed as per + fect + ion and (as evidenced by Douglas Harper) has a sense of: per "completely" + combining form of facere "to make, to do”. More succinctly, perfection carries the sense of being ‘completely done’. Dyslexia is real, and the journey to uncover truth behind the history and structure of words is unending . That being said, the journey can become easier, even joyful! Scholars know that we can hang out with our errors, our mistakes do not define our ability or our worth. Instead we turn towards our misunderstanding; this is where the opportunity for new and rich learning will take place. This is how we build our picture.
I work with students to dismantle that idea that there is something ‘wrong’ with how they learn. Instead we embrace the strengths of the dyslexic mind by learning through meaning, history, and relationship. I offer individualized and small group tutoring sessions to students of all ages online and in person. I accept new clients on an ongoing basis depending on availability.
The most rewarding part of my work is helping scholars in a way that most formal schooling hasn’t been able to. The good news is that English is highly regular once you understand that the history of the English language is intertwined with humanity. Once students gain this understanding they will begin to see that it is not their 'fault' that spelling is difficult. Furthermore, their difficulty is NOT a reflection of their intelligence. Awaking curiosity and dismantling the drive for perfection; this is where true scholarship lives.
I look forward to being on your team. We are all in this together.
